On Oktober 8th 2026, PT Pro Engineering Utama held a performance testing fire pump at PT Karakatau Chandra Energi
Upon receiving the client’s purchase order (PO) for fire pump performance testing, our team conducted an assessment and performance test of the existing diesel engine-driven pump system. The scope of work included evaluating the pump’s operational condition, measuring water flow and discharge pressure, and assessing the engine’s performance under operating conditions. The testing was carried out to evaluate the system’s actual performance and identify any limitations that could affect its suitability for fire protection applications, with reference to the applicable requirements of NFPA 20 and NFPA 25.
During the testing process, several technical challenges were encountered because the installed pump was originally a non-fire-protection pump product rather than a dedicated fire pump designed for fire protection service. In addition, the existing pump discharge line was not equipped with a pressure gauge, making it necessary to conduct the flow test by opening the hydrant outlets and applying an alternative measurement arrangement. An ultrasonic flow meter was used to measure the water flow, with its sensors installed in a Z-pattern configuration where suitable for the pipe material, diameter, and measurement conditions. Despite these limitations, the team successfully conducted the performance test and obtained the required flow measurement data to evaluate the pump’s operating performance in accordance with the applicable testing criteria and the referenced NFPA standards.
Based on the test results, the pump successfully achieved the required flow rate at 100% of its rated capacity. However, the test did not establish performance at the 150% rated-flow condition, and the engine’s performance could not be fully evaluated at this operating point. This limitation was associated with the existing equipment’s condition and its original application, which was not specifically intended for fire protection service. Therefore, although the pump achieved its rated flow during the test, further engineering evaluation is recommended to determine its overall suitability and reliability for fire protection duties. The results should be considered together with the applicable acceptance criteria, equipment specifications, and any additional testing required under the relevant NFPA standards.
